Laurel is located in The Meadows area in southeast Edmonton. The neighbourhood is bounded by 34 Street to the west, Anthony Henday Drive to the south, 23 Avenue to the north, and 17 Street to the east. A power line right-of-way also bisects the community from north to south. The community is being developed according to the Laurel Neighbourhood Structure Plan (NSP) adopted in 2007. The plan includes a large amount of single-family housing, as well as some medium-density housing.

Two school sites and several park areas are planned, as are multiple stormwater ponds and multi-use trails. Laurel is close to a number of amenities in South Edmonton Common, Mill Woods Town Centre, Rio-Can Meadows, and the Market at the Meadows. Residents have access to fitness, banking, and retail options, as well as the Meadows Community Recreation Centre. Amenities in Sherwood Park and Beaumont are also within easy driving distance.

The Meadows Transit Centre connects Laurel to the rest of the city and will provide greater convenience when the LRT line extension is complete.
