Dechene is located in the West Jasper Place South Plan area, just west of the Donsdale and Gariepy neighbourhoods, which border the North Saskatchewan River Valley. The neighbourhood is bounded by Callingwood Road to the north, 184th Street to the west, and Lessard Road/178th Street to the south and east.

Dechene is a predominantly low-density residential neighbourhood designed around a central shared school/park site. The roadway pattern consists of arterials along the exterior of the neighbourhood and a loops and cul-de-sac pattern for the interior network. Residential construction within the neighbourhood started in the 1980s and continued slowly but steadily into the early 2000s. Residential units within Dechene are almost entirely (98 percent) owner-occupied.

Dechene was named after Joseph Miville Dechene, who was born in Quebec and moved with his family to Alberta in 1892. They were among the first homesteaders in the Morinville district. Dechene moved to Edmonton in 1903 and opened a tobacco and news store in 1912. Later Dechene became engaged in political affairs and served as a member of the Alberta Legislature from 1921 to 1935. In 1940, he was elected as a member of Parliament for Athabasca. Dechene retained his seat until he retired in 1958.
