Aldergrove was developed during the 1970s and 1980s as one of the neighbourhoods in the West Jasper Place Area Structure Plan. Aldergrove follows a growth strategy common during that time. Neighbourhood units were planned and designed to make more efficient use of land by allowing for more multi-family development and subdividing smaller lots. This strategy was used in order to preserve agricultural land, conserve energy, and provide for more efficient delivery of services.

Multi-family sites are an integral part of the neighbourhood and are situated along collector roads, school, and shopping facilities. Single-detached housing occupies the western portion of the neighbourhood and accounts for over half of the total dwelling units.

This neighbourhood is likely named for the local alder trees. The speckled alder is the most common species in Canada.
